Human consciousness does not seamlessly fit within the evolutionary framework. Alfred Russell Wallace, co-discoverer of natural selection, famously argued that natural selection could not account for the complexity of the human brain. He suggested that a superior intelligence must have guided human development in a specific direction.

Where does consciousness come from?

Science says your brain builds it. Awareness somehow just switches on inside of dead matter, from nothing. But that's the one thing it has never been able to explain.

Philosophers call it the hard problem of consciousness, and thirty years after David Chalmers, there is still no answer.

The ancients told a different story. Plato, Plotinus, and the Gnostics said consciousness doesn't begin in the brain. It descends into it.
